Nine: If we take the triune brain and apply the three types of processing to the three levels of the human energy system (physical, soul and spirit), we come up with a nine-fold matrix that represents the completion of the human experience.
The same three-by-three matrix symbolizes the nine houses of the Bagua (Feng Shui).
The final number in the Decad, Nine carries the energy of completion, the ultimate step before a new cycle begins with Ten.
Thus Nine is the most sacred, the highest perfection/order/balance, the holiest energy to which we can aspire – the horizon of endeavor.
In its aspect as the boundary between human consciousness and transcendence, Nine also symbolizes journeys and extremes. Nine years the Achaeans besieged Troy, and Odysseus spent a further nine on his journey back to Ithaca. Ceres searched nine days for her daughter Koré, who afterwards dwelt nine months per year in the Underworld.
Other Greek Nines include the Muses, and many other sacred families.
Any religion based upon the triple goddess also revered nines as the thrice-sacred number.
The Egyptian pantheon contained nine gods and goddesses, overseeing the “nine bows” of humanity.
Medieval Christianity recognized nine crowns of kingship, nine crosses, nine orders of angels and nine circles, gates and rivers of Hell.
We see this extended in the 99 Names of God, 99 beads of the Islamic rosary, Abraham’s 99 years before being called by God, etc.
Arithmetically, nines have many curious properties. Every multiple of nine reduces to nine when we add the digits together. Fractions of nine repeat single digits. Through the exposed remainders, casting out the nines reveals the essential characteristics of numbers.
Like the heptagon, nonagons are impossible to construct accurately through the vesica pisces.
We can approach the horizon, but it inevitably recedes from our reach.
However, an excellent approximation can be made through the star hexagon.
Even more significant than the nonagon is the Enneagram, symbol of the process of the principles of transformation. Most commonly seen in the personality types first developed by the Sufis and more recently presented by Naranja and Palmer. The Enneagram depicts processes, and also the route of transformation available to those seeking spiritual transform-ation.
By recognizing the strengths and weaknesses of a one’s particular character, conscious witness (and therefore change) becomes easier.
Through the process of the Enneagram, the soul walks a path that that combines seven (spiritual strength) and nine (completion) in search of evolving consciousness.
